Naturally, the first thing most people want to know about this type of diet is whether or not it will help them to achieve and maintain a proper weight. In order to answer this question, let&#8217;s first talk about how diets work in general.</p>
<p>How does the alkaline diet&#8211;or any diet, for that matter&#8211;help you to lose weight? The answer comes down to calories in versus calories out. Almost any food can cause you to gain weight if you eat too much of it. It doesn&#8217;t matter whether we&#8217;re talking about greasy hamburgers, or a healthy salad loaded with avocados and walnut pieces&#8211;if you consume more calories than you burn, you&#8217;re going to gain weight.</p>
<p>Therefore, the downside of the <a href="http://www.alkalinediet.org/alkaline-diet/alkaline-diet/">alkaline diet</a> is that it does not guarantee weight loss. Some alkalizing foods are quite calorie-dense. I&#8217;m thinking in particular of nuts and seeds, avocados, and certain healthy oils. These are all very healthy foods, but if you&#8217;re trying to lose weight, you need to eat them in strict moderation.</p>
<p>So far, it probably sounds as though I&#8217;m pretty pessimistic about the <a href="http://www.alkalinediet.org/alkaline-diet/">alkaline diet for weight loss</a>. In fact, I&#8217;m just trying to be realistic. The only way to guarantee that you will lose weight is by counting calories. Any other approach, from the alkaline diet to the low-carb diet, is not guaranteed to cause weight loss. The good news about the alkaline diet, however, is that it emphasizes fresh fruits and vegetables, fruits that are high in fiber and very filling, but usually low in calories.</p>
<p>In conclusion, the alkaline diet can be an effective approach for weight loss. Just be careful to consume high-fat foods in moderation.</p>

<p>Osteoporosis is the most common degenerative bone disease. Although it is most common among elderly women, men and even young people can experience significant bone loss. The incidence of osteoporosis also varies significantly among different countries, with high levels in the United States and other developed countries where people eat a <a href="http://www.alkalinediet.org/alkaline-diet/alkaline-diet/">low-alkaline diet</a>, but very low levels in some less-developed nations that eat a traditional alkaline diet.</p>
<p>To understand how the alkaline diet can help prevent osteoporosis, we need to understand why excess acidity is harmful to your bones. The answer is pretty simple. When your body becomes too acidic, it tries to restore balance. One of the ways it attempts to accomplish this task is by drawing alkaline minerals from your bones. Once the minerals have been used to neutralize excess acid, they are excreted from your body. When this process continues year after year, the result can be significant bone loss, leaving you vulnerable to a sudden fracture.</p>

The reality, however, is that the goal of this diet is not to go to an extreme, but rather to achieve an optimal balance between acidifying and alkalizing foods. The so-called golden years can either be a blessing or a curse, depending on whether you&#8217;re in good health or plagued with illness. In addition to regular exercise and a positive attitude, a healthy alkaline diet can make a big difference in how well you age.</p>
<p>Older adults often lose muscle mass, partly because kidney function diminishes with age. When that happens, acids accumulate in the body, which must find a way to neutralize them. Often, your body will respond by breaking down muscle tissue to release alkalizing minerals. This coping mechanism will keep you alive, but at the cost of muscle strength. By following an alkaline diet, you can prevent this from happening.</p>
<p>Of course, the biggest sources of minerals in your body are your bones and teeth. Accordingly, when you eat a low-alkaline diet, your body often responds by breaking down your balance in order to release alkaline minerals. Instead of trying to fix osteoporosis after it happens, it&#8217;s better to prevent it by following this type of diet.</p>

Your kidneys are the most important organ for the elimination of the acids that are created by an acid-forming diet. Experts suggest that following an alkaline diet can help to preserve kidney function as you age, and even reduce the risk of some types of kidney stones.</p>
<p>As you can see, the alkaline diet has many benefits. I believe that these benefits are especially significant for older adults, whose reduced kidney function makes them less able to cope with the excess acid created by the typical Western diet.</p>
